I finished assembling the top of the sand table and I highly prefer countersinking screws over the pocket hole jig assembly. The latter lacks stability and is hard to assemble straight and square. So while the pocket hole jig appears convenient for a number of projects I think it is best used for light, non stabilizing joints.
I often forgo the wood glue even though I know better. I hope it won't matter too much in the end. So far the table appears stable. The real question is how straight it will be once the top gets screwed to the bottom.
One drawback with my work bench: the top is too thin and already started to split at one edge. I will have to reinforce it with either plywood or mdf.
